SEO vs AEO vs GEO: Where Should Your Business Invest in 2026?

Analytics dashboard comparing SEO, AEO and GEO channels for a business

Ask yourself: when your customers look for a business like yours, do they search, ask, or prompt? Increasingly, it's all three — a Google search on Tuesday, a "best pizza near me" to Maps on Friday, and a "which agency should I hire for X" to ChatGPT on Sunday. If you're only optimizing for one, you're invisible in the other two.

SEO: the front you know

Search Engine Optimization ranks your website in traditional Google results. In 2026 it still drives the largest volume of commercial intent, and its fundamentals are stable: technical health (speed, structure, schema), content that matches search intent, and authority earned through mentions and links. For local businesses, local SEO — your Google Business Profile, reviews, and Maps 3-pack position — is the highest-ROI slice of it.

AEO: the front that answers

Answer Engine Optimization is about being the cited answer when someone asks an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Google's AI Overviews. AI engines prefer content that's structured for extraction:

  • Direct, complete answers near the top of a page (question-and-answer format)
  • FAQ and entity schema that machines can parse with confidence
  • Consistent business facts everywhere: name, location, services, pricing ranges
  • Specific numbers and claims — vague content doesn't get quoted

The prize is outsized: an AI answer often names one to three businesses, not ten blue links. Being cited is winner-take-most.

GEO: the front that's forming

Generative Engine Optimization is the emerging practice of shaping how your brand appears inside AI-generated results and summaries — the tone, the facts, the comparisons. It overlaps with AEO but extends to brand mentions across the wider web that models learn from: directories, reviews, press, forums. Think of GEO as reputation management for machine readers.

So where should you invest first?

For most GTA small businesses, the honest order is:

  • 1. Local SEO + reviews. Fastest payback, weeks not months. Consistent Google reviews are both an SEO signal and an AEO trust source
  • 2. Technical + on-page SEO. A structurally sound website is the prerequisite for everything else — AEO can't cite pages Google can't crawl
  • 3. AEO layering. Restructure your best pages into extractable answers with schema. Cheap to add once the foundation exists
  • 4. GEO monitoring. Track what AI engines say about you quarterly and correct the record where it's wrong

The mistake to avoid

Don't chase GEO buzzwords before your foundations exist. A business with a slow website, 12 old reviews and no schema doesn't need a "generative AI visibility strategy" — it needs the basics, executed excellently, in the order above. That's exactly how our client Aziz Law went from zero search presence to 38 page-one keywords and 4x AI citations: foundations first, then the new fronts.

Quick answers

Yes. Google still handles billions of commercial searches daily, and AI assistants source their recommendations largely from content that ranks and reviews that exist. Strong SEO is the foundation AEO and GEO are built on — the channels compound rather than compete.

Structure pages as direct answers to real questions, add FAQ and organization schema, keep business facts consistent across the web, and build genuine review volume. AI engines cite sources that are structured, specific, consistent and corroborated.
